The Republic Monument
I gave you some information about Taksim Square and briefly mention about Istiklal Caddesi before. Also you can find some places information such as St.Antuan Church and Galata Tower if you check it out past two postings before this one.
Republic Monument or Cumhuriyet Anıtı is a remarkable monument which located in Taksim Square and it is also one of the most inspiring thing about liberty. The 11m high monument is representing the commemoration of the Turkish Republic. It was built in 1923 after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire with Dr.Hakkı Sinasi Pasha’s financial support and designed by famous Italian sculptor Pietro Canonica.
The monument was also constructed in order to change the taboos that had existed from Ottoman times and portrays the founders of the Turkish Republic: Kemal Atatürk, İsmet İnönü and Fevzi Çakmak. It has two sides, north side depicts Atatürk at an earlier ages and the other side shows Atatürk and his comrades dressed in modern, European clothing. This is really meaningful actually because it is symbolizing him in both his roles, as military commander and as statesman.
If you look carefully, you will notice that figures of two Soviet Russian generals are among the group behind Atatürk. It points out to the military help given by Lenin during the Turkish War of Independence in 1920 and it was ordered by Ataturk.
It is the most crowded meeting place in Turkey especially for the locals, at the same time official ceremonies on national holidays are being held here. This monument has been witness every single political actions since the Turkey Republic was founded by Ataturk. Therefore, I am highly recommended to visit if you want to know Modern Turkey’s history.
